Santa Sabina College PV Model SSC PV Project
Santa Sabina College is located in Strathfield, Sydney, Australia. It is an independent Catholic school, welcoming boys from Kindergarten to Year 4 and girls from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Santa Sabina College has a strong commitment to academic and personal excellence, to nurturing the individual and to the development of leadership and education for justice. Our education fosters the curious mind and develops a desire for life long learning. Through the continuum of learning from Kindergarten to Year 12 our students are encouraged to develop independence, creativity and leadership and to have a world view that is life-giving and hope-filled.
Santa Sabina College is committed to the provision of schooling which is appropriate for the 21st century, so that our learners are enabled to continuously transform their understanding of themselves and their worlds and use this understanding to face the challenges and possibilities of their lives.
Santa Sabina is committed to stewardship of our earth and to creating a sustainable environment for future generations.
Thus our community has appreciated the opportunity to establish a unique partnership with the University of NSW through our collaboration with Dr Richard Corkish, Head of the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering, Engineering UNSW. This has seen the joint establishment of a solar energy solutions project. Through this venture our students are exploring ways of obtaining clean energy to reduce the green house effect.
The project has involved the installation at the College of a small photovoltaic system which is grid connected. The data loggers – computers, record the amount of electricity made and relay the information to our school computers, for information and research. Real time data on the amount of CO2 emissions that are being saved, and how much silent renewable energy the solar panels are putting back into the electricity grid can also be recorded, and our students can analyse and compare the data collected.
Working on a photovoltaic energy project with a fourth year student, Mr Wally Long Nguyen, who has written his thesis on this project, provides an opportunity for our students to learn how scientists work. Additionally, those involved can explore new and creative ways to tackle some of the problems associated with maintaining a sustainable environment for the future.
